You cannot go anywhere on campus without mention of Gordon MacKay. “He has done a remarkable job for us, and we would hurt without him,” says colleague David Simzer. “Gord is phenomenal,” adds Wayne Barrer. And his popularity keeps on growing.

To begin, Gord is a Professor in the Microcomputer Engineering Technology Program as well as the Administrator of computer systems for the new advanced computer centre. With this responsibility, he has done the layout of the lab, as well as the implementation of the networking, security and teaching software in the systems. To add to his busy schedule, he writes software for Linux. His most popular to date is called NetWatch which is on the Internet. It is generating a lot of interest. “It is nice to see something you have done, being used”, he says.

Gord spent many years hiking and backpacking recounting several trips he has taken along the Niagara Escarpment and to the Bruce Peninsula.

A graduate of McMaster University with Honours in Physics, Gord has had much career experience in his field. He started at the Ontario Research Foundation where he tested the efficiency of solar collectors for the National Research Council. He also worked on a satellite ground terminal project where he developed software and did systems analysis. Within the same company, he worked on the cruise missile in the guidance system testing department. Gord went to California for a year where he worked in software development. He later worked as an independent software developer. Gord eventually applied to work at St. Lawrence College and has been teaching ever since.

Gord explains why he would choose St. Lawrence College, Cornwall. “The facilities are up-to-date, you have the opportunity to get a good background and you will learn things here that are going to be applied in the workplace.” He further adds “We (the Cornwall campus) are unique because of the approaches we take on the subjects, we give you the background that a lot of the other colleges cannot offer.” His pride for college life is evident “College students are recognized very early on as people who can be very valuable to a company.”
